Our research indicates some consumers are considering whether to fund a 401(k) or permanent life insurance as a means of retirement planning. Why might they be making this comparison?
Comparing permanent life insurance to a 401(k) is an “apples to oranges” comparison, as they are two different tools that are appropriate in very different situations. Selling a policy earns the salesperson a hefty commission, so they are motivated to push these products as much as possible. An insurance salesperson earns nothing if they tell you to invest in your 401(k) instead.

The median length of unemployment during the Great Recession was about six months in June 2010, up significantly from two months in November 2007, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “It’s important to note that six months was the median, which means 50% of unemployment periods were longer than six months,” said Allen Mueller, founder of 7 Saturdays Financial.
“A major part of financial planning is being prepared for not only the expected case, but also having additional contingencies to fund a worst-case scenario,” Mueller said. “Running out of cash in the event of a job loss could mean piling up credit-card debt, or having a home foreclosed on.”

Allen Mueller, a financial planner and founder of 7 Saturdays Financial in Dallas, often hears from clients concerned about building generational wealth. “I think it’s just about setting their kids up for a better starting position than they were given,” he said.
While not all parents have the means to give their kids a big pile of cash, either in their will or during their lifetime, there are still steps they can take to bolster their children’s financial security, and many are relatively easy and inexpensive.

Could you explain how one can leverage their life insurance policy for investment purposes?
Some types of life insurance have an “investment” component — they build up cash value within the policy. This cash value builds over time as contributions are made and interest is credited. It can be withdrawn, borrowed against, used to pay future policy costs, etc. It’s important to note that the interest that is credited to life insurance policies is almost always lower than what is achievable with traditional investments. The insurance company must make a profit, after all.
